How an impact attenuator works

It is designed to collapse progressively to reduce damage in a crash. Its length is set from a precise chart based on the posted speed.

  • Summer

The tanks are filled with water.

  • Winter

They are filled with calcium chloride, mixed so it only freezes below -40 °C. A frozen attenuator no longer does its job.

  • TL means Test Level

The number from 1 to 3 is the protection level required for the posted speed.

Frequently asked questions

Why fill attenuators with calcium chloride in winter?

Because water would freeze. Calcium chloride solution stays liquid down to -40 °C, so the attenuator can still absorb an impact.

What do TL-1, TL-2 and TL-3 mean?

TL stands for Test Level. The number from 1 to 3 is the protection level, chosen according to the posted speed on site.

Is an engineer’s certificate required?

Yes. At mobilization, a certificate from an engineer who is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec confirms the attenuator is assembled to manufacturer specifications.

Can you do the filling only?

Yes. All our services are available à la carte or all-in: sale, rental, installation, filling and certification.
